What to Pack for a Sailing Cruise in Chios: The Ultimate Preparation Guide

One of the most common questions people ask when they book a sailing cruise in Chios is:

“What should I bring with me?”

The answer is not always obvious, especially if it’s your first time on a sailing yacht.

The goal of this guide is to make things easy: to show you exactly what you need, what you can safely leave at the hotel, and which small items will make a big difference to your comfort and enjoyment on board.

The tips below are based on our experience from hundreds of cruises with Cruises 4 All in Chios and the Eastern Aegean.

Essentials for every type of cruise

Whether you’ve chosen a day cruise, a sunset trip or a full weekly sailing holiday, there are some items that are essential for everyone.

Clothing & swimwear

  • 1–2 sets of swimwear (ideally a spare, so you always have a dry one)

  • Light, comfortable clothes (shorts, t‑shirts, light dresses, linen)

  • A hat or bandana for sun protection

  • A light jacket or hoodie for the afternoon or if the wind picks up

  • A beach towel (if not provided by the cruise – you can always ask in advance)

Sun protection

The Aegean sun, especially in summer, can be strong and reflects off the sea.

Make sure you bring:

High‑SPF sunscreen (SPF 30+ or 50, preferably water‑resistant)

Lip balm with SPF

Sunglasses with UV protection

A hat that provides good shade for your face (and preferably your neck as well)

Useful extras people often forget

Beyond the basics, there are a few items that are not strictly necessary, but can make your sailing experience much more comfortable.

Practical small items

Waterproof phone case – great if you want to take photos close to the water

Power bank – handy if you use your phone a lot for photos and videos

Hair ties or headbands, especially on windy days

A spacious beach bag or backpack to keep all your personal items together

Medication & personal care

Any personal medication you take regularly

Allergy medication if you know you might need it

A small cream or gel for insect bites

If you’re prone to seasickness, speak to your doctor in advance or try seasickness wristbands / gum / tablets

(Note: there is a basic first‑aid kit on board, but your personal medication is always your responsibility.)

What to bring if you’re travelling with children

Family sailing cruises in Chios can be some of the most beautiful travel memories – as long as you’re a bit prepared.

Comfort & protection for kids

Children’s sunscreen with a high SPF

A hat with a strap so it doesn’t fly away in the wind

Kids’ sunglasses

1–2 extra sets of clothes (for after swimming)

A children’s towel or poncho that dries quickly

Entertainment & play

Although most kids love swimming and being on the boat, it helps to bring:

Small water toys, snorkel, mask, fins or an inflatable

A small book, colouring set or travel game for quiet moments in the shade

For very young children, their favourite soft toy or comfort item to help them feel at home

What you DON’T need to bring

One of the most common mistakes people make before a cruise is packing far more than they actually need.

Several pairs of shoes – one pair of comfortable sandals or sneakers is enough

A large suitcase – for a day or sunset cruise, a simple beach bag is perfect

Expensive jewellery or accessories that might fall into the sea or get damaged

Large amounts of food – most Cruises 4 All experiences already include a set menu or snacks on board

(If you’ve chosen a package where you can bring your own food/drinks, you’ll know about it in advance.)

Extra tips for photos & memories

A sailing cruise around Chios is, by nature, extremely photogenic.

To make the most of it:

Use a phone with a good camera or a camera with a secure strap

Clean the lens regularly (sea spray can leave smudges)

Take some photos early in the morning or just before sunset – the light is softer and more flattering

Don’t forget to enjoy the moment without a camera as well: give yourself some time just to sit on deck and watch the sea

Quick pre‑departure checklist

Just before you leave your accommodation, run through this short checklist:

  • Swimwear & towel

  • Hat & sunglasses

  • Sunscreen & lip balm

  • Light clothes & a jacket

  • Medication & personal items

  • Phone, power bank, waterproof case (optional)

  • A bit of cash / card for extras

  • Your good mood

If you forget something, the skipper and crew will always do their best to help, but this simple list will cover you in almost every situation.

Preparing for a sailing cruise in Chios doesn’t have to be stressful.

With a few smart choices, you can bring only what you truly need, leaving more room for what matters most: enjoying the Aegean Sea with freedom and peace of mind.

If you’re unsure about what is included in your specific package or what is available on board, the Cruises 4 All team is always happy to help you plan the perfect day at sea.
